We got people talking about a few mysterious sounds

The oscilloscope ARG began when secret messages were displayed in the site code of EsmailCorp.com. Users were encouraged to follow a trail that led to discordant sounds broadcast in the test tone. Assembling these tones created a cohesive sound. Then, on the show ("Mr. Robot"), users were briefly introduced to an email address that tied into the show's content. Sending an email to that address resulted in a cryptic reply with paranoid messages and a phone tree that provided the next clue — that the sound could be viewed when played through an oscilloscope.

Esmail took the message to Reddit because we knew that's where his fans were. We hid breadcrumbs in the code, in the tones, on the phone, and over email, because we knew that's where they'd look.

"Mr Robot" fans love solving puzzles and have no fear of a challenge. When engaged, they get very social and talktative. We chose to create a series of complex clues because we knew it would make users feel challenged and plugged in.
